What Is Wick Diameter?
Wick diameter refers to the thickness of the wick, typically measured in millimeters or fractions of an inch. It's the measurement across the widest part of the wick's core. This seemingly simple measurement has a profound impact on how much fuel (melted wax) the wick can draw up and burn, which directly affects flame size, heat output, and overall candle performance.
Why Wick Diameter Matters
The diameter of your wick controls the burn rate of your candle. A thicker wick will draw more melted wax up into the flame, creating a larger, hotter flame. A thinner wick will produce a smaller flame and burn more slowly. Getting this balance right is crucial for several reasons: it ensures even wax consumption, prevents tunneling (where the candle burns down the middle and leaves wax on the sides), and helps your candle last as long as it should.
Matching Wick Diameter to Candle Size
Different candle sizes require different wick diameters. A small votive candle needs a much thinner wick than a large pillar candle. If you use a wick that's too thick for your candle, you'll get excessive smoking, soot buildup, and wasted wax. If your wick is too thin, the candle won't produce enough heat to create a proper melt pool, and it may self-extinguish or burn unevenly.

The best way to determine the right wick diameter for your candles is through testing. Most candle makers recommend starting with a wick size recommendation based on your candle's diameter and wax type, then burning test candles to observe the flame behavior, melt pool formation, and burn time.
